I. Overall Evaluation It has been another successful year for the Northeastern Section YCC. Our amazing website, http://people.bu.edu/nsycc has highlights of all our YCC activities, NESACS events, YCC awards, travel programs, and includes photos of our annual conference NSCRC (Northeast Student Chemistry Research Conference). From our website, younger chemists may also sign-up on our mailing list , which notifies YCC members of upcoming events. At our 3rd annual NSCRC 2001, we had in attendance, nine students from Germany and the President of the ACS, Attila Pavlath This year we have had increased attendance of younger chemists at the NESACS monthly meetings and won our second ChemLuminary award. II. Officers and Members
Career Planning subcommittee: Northeast Student Chemistry Research Conference (NSCRC) Subcommittee: Vio Buchete - Boston University, buchete@bu.edu - webmaster III. Activities + Announcements One week trip to Germany in March 2002 NESACS-YCC/GDCh-JCF Exchange In 2002, the NESACS-YCC will be sending 12 students to Germany for a week of science, education, and friendship. Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply. Deadline for receipt of application: December 3, 2001. This event is organized by the NESACS education committee and the NESACS-YCC. The committee members are Dr. Michael Strem, Dr. Morton Hoffman, Dr. Ruth Tanner, and Amy Tapper. C&EN article on the ChemLuminary Award is available online October 4th at 7:00pm - Social Event To be held at An Tua Nua (formerly Ri Ra's) at 835 Beacon St., Boston, MA (West of Kenmore Square). Must be 21 or older with proper identification. Come out and meet other younger chemists in the Northeastern Section YCC. This event was not well attended as previous socials. There were about 10 YCC members in attendance. In the past we have found that offering free food or e.g. a free beer to the first 20 attendees brings out a larger crowd. October 11th - Monthly meeting of the Northeastern Section ACS To be held at the Henderson House in Weston, MA. The evening speaker is Eli Pearce, President-elect of the ACS. We would like to have as many younger chemists attend to express our needs and concerns to the new president. For reservations and if you need a ride, contact Marilou Cashman at MCash0953@aol.com For more details of the dinner meeting, visit http://www.NESACS.org . Dinner is only $8 for students. The 1st Organizational Meeting of NSCRC 2002 will be held in November 2001. Please e-mail us your suggestions and new membership requests! We will be looking for people to take leadership roles in our Northeastern Section YCC. We will also be looking to fill positions on the social, conference (NSCRC 2002), and career development committees. Please remember to use our e-mail list: nsycc-list@bu.edu for messages of general interest to the NSYCC community!!! At the 222nd National ACS Meeting in Chicago, IL, August 26-30, 2001, at the ChemLuminary Awards event, our Northeastern Section YCC won the Outstanding Local Section Younger Chemists Committee Award. This is the second year in a row that our section has won a ChemLuminary award. NESACS Summertime Event The annual NESACS Summertime Event, a Boston Red Sox game was co-sponsored by the NESACS-YCC. Refreshments were served before the game at the Boston University Chemistry department (which is just a ball’s throw from Fenway Park) NERM 2001 The American Chemical Society 30th Northeast Regional Meeting (NERM) 2001 was held at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) at Durham. The Northeastern Younger Chemists Committee along with the Student Affiliate Chapter hosted a luncheon Monday June 25th called After the BS. We helped arrange the lunch, talk to panelists, and advertise the program. About 45 undergraduates and graduate students attended this panel discussion in which five well-established industrial chemists shared their insights about finding a job and maintaining one. After each panelist gave a five-ten minute presentation, the moderator, Steven Watkins (a recent graduate of UNH), opened the floor for questions. There was a nice dialogue between the students in the audience and panelists. In fact, that dialogue lead a senior at Stonehill College (Easton, MA) to secure a fabulous job thanks to one of the panelists. We collected questionnaires at the end to gain feedback for future panel discussions. Overall, it was a successful event, and we are glad that NSYCC was part of it.
The C&EN article on NSCRC 2001 is available online (May

2001 - The 3rd Annual Northeast Student Chemistry Research
Conference Younger Chemists Career Workshop WHEN:
January 11, 2001. 4:00-5:30pm
The workshop will feature a panel discussion by Dr. Anthony Fernandez,

Patricia Hamm of Suffolk University who will talk on the importance
of peer mentoring. IV. Budget In 2001, the NESACS-YCC had a very healthy budget. The total was $10,000. Five thousand of the budget was dedicated to the NESACS-YCC/JCF-GDCh initiative. Four thousand was dedicated to NSCRC 2001. The additional $1,000 was spent on the various activites of the LSYCC. V. Future Plans
The general future plans for the NESACS-YCC consist of increasing membership,
filling of the leadership roles of the committee with younger members,
continuation of the Northeast Student Chemistry Research Conference
(NSCRC), and increasing frequency of YCC social and career oriented
events. We also hope to increase participation of YCC members in NESACS
and National ACS activities. |
